Identity Transformation in Saudi Male International University Students Studying in the United States

The number of Saudi Arabian international students who pursue higher education in the United States has steadily risen over the past decade. Relatively little research has been devoted to investigating how the experience of studying at an institution of higher education in the United States impacts the Saudi Arabian identity. It is an area of significance given the interconnected nature of language acquisition, identity, and culture, and the differences between Saudi Arabia and the United States. The aim of this small-scale qualitative study was to explore how the experience of studying in the United States impacts Saudi male identity. Semi-structured, one-on-one interviews were conducted with seven Saudi Arabian male students at a Midwestern university about their experiences studying in the United States, their feelings and perceptions of those experiences, and how they feel it has ultimately impacted their individual identities, as well as the collective Saudi male identity. Nine major themes relating to identity were identified in analysis of the interviews, seven of which related to transformation in the Saudi male identity: independence/self reliance, academics, open-mindedness/tolerance, experiencing discrimination and stereotypes based on perceptions of their identity, interactions with females as peers/classmates and teachers, and evolving perspectives on aspects of Saudi Arabian society culture and society

Business Transformation through Human Resource Transformation: Empirical Study with regard to Tea Industry in Kandy District

    Get PDF
Today, HR is considered as an important resource than ever before since the business leaders and decision makers have identified that HR is the only resource that could make a significant difference at the end of the day since the modern business context is very competitive as well as challengeable. In such conditions any kind of a business should be aware that they should be much more innovative and flexible to be stable in such a dynamic environmental conditions. Therefore, transformation of business is crucial based on the timely need. The concept of business transformation is very much new to the business context especially in a country like Sri Lanka, since the relevant knowledge, awareness and readiness is very little. Thus, this study was focused on the impact of human resources in terms of employee knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies towards successful business transformation of the tea industry in Kandy District, This was an empirical study where a sample of 100 managerial and executive level officers of selected tea factories was tested based on the convenient sampling method using a self-administrated questionnaire. Findings suggest that HR indeed has a significant impact on successful transformation of business transformation. In fact, human knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies do contribute to transform the tea industry in Kandy District where employee attitudes and competencies were found to be more significant compared to employee knowledge, and skills. There should be continuous efforts taken to maintain and upgrade the level of business transformation while considering the need and availability of factors other than H

Praxis Mapping: A methodology for evaluating the political impacts of international projects

This report describes the participatory development of a process we have used to consider the political implications of a climate justice project we worked on together from 2010 to 2013, called Strengthening the role of civil society in water sector governance towards climate change adaptation in African cities – Durban, Maputo, Nairobi (see http://ccaa.irisyorku.ca). This project was funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID) through their Climate Change Adaptation in Africa programme. This research was supported by the International Development Research Centr

Lotka--Volterra Type Equations and their Explicit Integration

In the present note we give an explicit integration of some two--dimensionalised Lotka--Volterra type equations associated with simple Lie algebras, other than the familiar AnA_n case, possessing a representation without branching. This allows us, in particular, to treat the first fundamental representations of ArA_r, BrB_r, CrC_r, and G2G_2 on the same footing.Comment: 3 pages LATEX fil

    Four-dimensional BPS-spectra via M-theory

We consider the realization of four-dimensional theories with N = 2 supersymmetry as M-theory configurations including a five-brane. Our emphasis is on the spectrum of massive states, that are realized as two-branes ending on the five-brane. We start with a determination of the supersymmetries that are left unbroken by the background metric and five-brane. We then show how the central charge of the N = 2 algebra arises from the central charge associated with the M-theory two-brane. This determines the condition for a two-brane configuration to be BPS-saturated in the four-dimensional sense. By imposing certain conditions on the moduli, we can give concrete examples of such two-branes. This leads us to conjecture that vectormultiplet and hypermultiplet BPS-saturated states correspond to two-branes with the topology of a cylinder and a disc respectively. We also discuss the phenomenon of marginal stability of BPS-saturated states.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, uses harvmac. References adde

Structure and Growth of Core–shell Nanoprecipitates in Al–Er–Sc–Zr–V–Si High-temperature Alloys

Lightweight Sc-containing aluminum alloys exhibit superior mechanical performance at high temperatures due to core–shell, L12-ordered trialuminide nanoprecipitates. In this study, the structure of these nanoprecipitates was studied, using different transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques, for an Al–Er– Sc–Zr–V–Si alloy that was subjected to a two-stage overaging heat treatment. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy of the spherical Al3(Sc, Zr, Er ,V) nanoprecipitates revealed a core–shell structure with an Sc- and Er-enriched core and a Zr-enriched shell, without a clear V outer shell. This structure is stable up to 72% of the absolute melting temperature of Al for extended periods of time. High-angle annular dark-field scanning TEM was used to image the {100} planes of the nanoprecipitates, demonstrating a homogeneous L12-ordered superlattice structure for the entire nanoprecipitates, despite the variations in the concentrations of solute atoms within the unit cells. A possible growth path and compositional trajectory for these nanoprecipitates was proposed using high-resolution TEM observations, where different rod-like structural defects were detected, which are considered to be precursors to the spherical L12-ordered nanoprecipitates. It is also hypothesized that the structural defects could consist of segregated Si; however, this was not possible to verify with HAADF-STEM because of the small differences in Al and Si atomic numbers. The results herein allow a better understanding of how the Al–Sc alloys’ core–shell nanoprecipitates form and evolve temporally, thereby providing a better physical picture for future atomistic structural mappings and simulations
